A
Post-classical
(1100CE-1900CE) Islamic Philosophy: A Handlist (by Author) of Major Extant
Arabic Works and Commentaries
Source:
Carl
Brockelmann, Geschichte der arabischen
Litteratur (Volumes I-II: Weimar 1898 and Berlin 1902 [first edition],
Leiden 1943 and 1949 [second edition]; Supplementary Volumes I-III: Leiden
1937, 1938 and 1942).
Key:
The name
by which an author of one of the 65 or so original works is most commonly known
is listed first, in bold characters. Then there appear his death-date, if known
(otherwise the date when he completed the work in question, or his floruit; still, many of the commentators
remain unidentified), with the Hijrī year listed first and the Common-Era
year listed second; the geographical region or regions in which he was active,
as listed by Brockelmann in the second volumes of the GAL and Suppl. (in the
first volumes of the GAL and Suppl., covering the period up to
656/1258, the authors are generally not divided according to region, so that
information has been added); and finally, in quotation marks, the
classification assigned to him by Brockelmann. The full name of the author is
then listed, after which there appears the page-reference to the GAL (both first and second editions) and
Suppl. As for the authors of the
commentaries, their full names have been provided whenever possible.
Notes:
(1)
Brockelmann’s single geographical category ‘Īrān und Tūrān’
has been translated as ‘Īrān and Transoxania’, since Tūrān
refers simply to the lands beyond the River Oxus.
(2) A
first-order commentary is listed as C1, a second-order commentary as
C2, a third-order commentary as C3, a fourth-order commentary
as C4, and a fifth-order commentary as C5. This system
was adopted for two reasons. The first is that English has terms only for
first-, second- and third-order exegetical works (viz., ‘Commentary’, ‘Gloss’
and ‘Supergloss’), and none for fourth- and fifth-order exegetical works. The
second reason is that the Arabic terms that normally correspond to the English
terms – sharḥ (pl. shurūḥ; and less often tafsīr [pl. tafāsīr]) for ‘Commentary’; ḥāshiya (pl. ḥawāshī;
literally ‘margin’, but usually referring to marginal comments) for ‘Gloss’;
and taʿlīq or taʿlīqa (pl. taʿālīq or taʿlīqāt; literally
‘appending’, i.e., at the end of a treatise, but sometimes also referring to
interlinear comments) for ‘Supergloss’ – are not always consistently applied in
the Arabic titles of these works. This is sometimes because an author will
choose one of these terms simply because it scans and rhymes better in his
mnemonic title.[1]
(3) A
‘Self-commentary’ refers to a
commentary written by an author on his own work.
(4) A
‘Versification’ refers to the
rearrangement, in rhyme and meter, of a short work.
(5) Extra
information provided by Brockelmann is placed in [square brackets].
(6)
Because the authors are listed in chronological order wherever possible, the
numbering of the authors differs from that of Brockelmann, whose lists were
sometimes, though not always, arranged chronologically.
(7) In about
one-third of the entries the data provided by Brockelmann has been supplemented
or corrected, on the basis of information contained in more recently published
works (and particularly the Encyclopaedia
of Islam, New Edition [Leiden 1960-2002]) as well as in private
correspondence between Wisnovsky and colleagues in the field.

For summaries of how these Arabic exegetical terms were used, see the
corresponding entries in The
Encyclopaedia of Islam, New Edition (Leiden 1960-2002); see also D. Gutas,
'Aspects of literary form and genre in Arabic logical works', in Glosses and Commentaries on Aristotelian
Logical Texts: The Syriac, Arabic and Medieval Latin Traditions, ed. C.
Burnett (London 1993) 29-76.
[2]
Possibly a corruption of Muḥammad ibn Aḥmad ash-Sharīf
at-Tilimsānī.
[3]
Possibly a reference to ash-Sharīf at-Tilimsānī’s commentary on al-Jumal.
[4]
Possibly a versification of al-Jumal,
not of al-Mūjaz.
[5]
Brockelmann records that a commentary on al-Qazwīnī
al-Kātibī’s Ḥikmat
al-ʿayn by a Muḥammad ibn Mūsā at-Tālishī
was completed 884/1479.
[6]
Possibly Yūsuf ibn Muḥammad Khān al-Qarabāghī
(1035/1626).
[7]
Possibly identical to the next entry, ‘al-Fanārī’ having been misread
by a scribe or cataloguer as ‘Anṣārī’.
[8]
Possibly a commentary on al-Īsāghūjī
al-jadīd, the author of which may be Qara Dāʾūd
al-Qūchawī (948/1541). Alternatively, the author might in fact be
Dāʾūd ibn Muḥammad al-Qāriṣī/al-Fāriḍī
(ca. 1150/1737).
[9]
Other accounts put Yazdī’s death at 981/1573-4.
[10]
In private correspondence Khaled El-Rouayheb questions al-Khabīṣī’s
death-date, pointing out that Brockelmann follows the early-20th-century
bibliographer Ismāʿīl al-Baghdādī in putting
al-Khabīṣī’s death-date at ca. 1050/1640. In this particular
case the date suggested by Ismāʿīl al-Baghdādī seems
too late. Al-Khabīṣī, whose name indicates eastern Persian
origin (Khabīṣ is a town in eastern Iran), dedicated his work to
ʿAbdallaṭīf Khān: see Ḥasan al-ʿAṭṭār,
Ḥāshiya ʿalā
l-Khabīṣī (Cairo 1290 AH) 7-8 (margin). This is almost
certainly the Shibanid ruler of Transoxania between 1540 and 1552: see C.E.
Bosworth, The New Islamic Dynasties
(Edinburgh 1996)., 288. The only other ʿAbdallaṭīf Khān
mentioned by Bosworth is one of the Khāns of Kazan in the middle Volga
region, who ruled between 1496 and 1502, see ibid., 259.
[11]
Possibly the same work as Muftīzāde’s C2 on al-Anṭakī’s
C1 (Self-commentary) on his own ar-Risālat
al-Ḥusayniyya.
[12]
Brockelmann gives a death-date of ca. 947/1540.
[13]
This glossator is listed as ash-Sharānishī in the Suppl., which also lists Muḥammad
ash-Shīrānisī (sic) as a glossator on the commentary by
ʿIṣāmaddīn Ibrāhīm ibn Muḥammad ibn
ʿArabshāh al-Isfarāʾīnī (944/1537).
[14]
Possibly Yūsuf ibn Muḥammad Khān al-Qarabāghī
(1035/1626).
[15]
Possibly identical to C1 (1).
[16]
At one point Brockelmann lists this work as an abridgement of
al-Ghazālī’s (505/1111)
ar-Risālat al-Qudsiyya: GAL I2,
99.
[17]
In fact a study only of the ḥadīths
cited in Taftāzānī’s Commentary.
[18]
Given this scholar’s Indian background, it is possible that this work, as well as
C1 (14), by Mullānawī, may in fact be commentaries on the
Indian scholar al-Bihārī’s Sullam
al-ʿulūm, having perhaps been miscatalogued as commentaries on
the Maghribī scholar al-Akhḍarī’s as-Sullam al-murawniq. But given the fact that Muḥibballāh
al-Allāhābādī (1085/1648) is also listed as the author of a
commentary on al-Akhḍarī’s Sullam,
and that he lived half a century before al-Bihārī (1119/1707-8) wrote his own Sullam,
it is possible that al-Akhḍarī’s Sullam
reached India as early as the mid-11th/early-17th
century. Having said that, Muḥibballāh
al-Allāhābādī may turn out to be the same person as Muḥibballāh
al-Bihārī, given Allāhābād’s proximity to the province
of Bihār.
[19]
Possibly identical to C1 (3).
